M i s s I n g r i d S c h u l l e r
Unbelievable. School was just starting out
and I was already bogged down. It started
this morning, when I had to pick up the books
for Advanced English class, then I'd had papers
and grades to check, updates I had to do,
organizing my room, the list seemed endless.
Hopefully, things would get better as the year
went on. This was my first year teaching at
Knoxville, and already it was a step up, both
in prestige and work, from my first teaching job.
My red Jeep hummed with the powerful noise
of the engine as it sped down the asphalt road.
I was a careful driver, for sure, so I didn't let
my car go too fast, since it was a rougher ride
than some other cars I'd driven before and was
harder to control at a fast pace. Still, I liked it.
It definitely suited me better than a Honda or
a Ford truck, I suppose I was just a Jeep type
of person. I'd grown accustomed to the somewhat
bumpy ride and now the ride was even smoother
as I drove down the newly blacktopped pavement
leading through the residential suburb area adjacent to the city.
Turning a left, I drove down a long row of well
furnished brick, Mediterranean, and Victorian
homes until I finally spotted my familiar house.
The exterior was a basic red brick, not unlike many
of the others, and there was some fancy black trim
around the shutters and the porch. Pulling into
the circle driveway, I halted the vehicle and turned
off the ignition. I grabbed my purse and stepped
out of my car. The house wasn't extremely
spacious or luxurious, but it was nice and had one
bedroom, plus a second smaller spare bedroom,
as well as two bathrooms and a nice, modernized
kitchen and open window living area.
The house was modest, but it suited me and I
stepped inside after crossing the porch and
unlocking the front door. I clicked the Lock
button on my car keys and shut the entry door
behind me. My sandals clicked on the wooden
floors and echoed a little in the empty house.
Making my way to the kitchen, I deposited my
purse on the granite counter and pulled off my
sandals, making my way to the living room to
recline for but a moment on my couch.
Then, it was back to work.
