Okay...here's the basic yearly syllabus. I just wanted to clarify for all those who might wonder. And I'll add on as we go along, too.
B a s i c O v e r v i e w
-In Class Novels
--To Kill A Mockingbird
----Read the story, annotate, write a concluding essay over it
--The Scarlet Letter
----Read and discuss, annotate, research it, do an essay over it
--Beowulf
----Read, annotate, discuss and write an essay over it
(As of now, this is our in-class reading list. We'll go through the books and analyze them thoroughly, then test over them)
W r i t i n g
-We will do quite a bit of writing, as in essays, annotations, and grammar reviewing(though the class is based more on advanced literature than grammar basics)
-We will do a poem and short story segment, and analyze works such as The Raven, the Tell Tale Heart, both by Edgar Allen Poe, as well as other short literary units
-We will often do essay prompts over basic views or specific texts, and analyses over the selected topics ranging from one to five paragraphs
O u t s i d e R e a d i n g
-Students are offered extra credit by reading one outside novel selected from the semester list of choices (not mandatory, but optional)
-The 1st Semester List:
--The Poisonwood Bible
--Little Women
--The Hobbit
--
--
-The 2nd Semester List:
--Jane Eyre
--Ruby Holler
--The Thief Lord
--
--
(Students doing extra credit reading must be able to offer a one paragraph synopsis of the novel they chose from the above lists)
S c h e d u l e (in order)
-1st Semester:
--Read & Test Over: To Kill A Mockingbird
--Read & Test Over: The Scarlet Letter
--Essay & Novel Analyses
-2nd Semester:
--Edgar Allen Poe Literature
--Grammar & Vocab Unit
--Advanced English Final
*****OOC: On a final note, I'd recommend that those of you in this class or doing extra credit Google a synopsis for the book, or if you've read it yourself, great. Because the character WILL be required to know a little about the in class books and outside novels...though I won't grill you on it, don't worry. Just pretend it's a real class.
