The grand auditorium had been transformed.
No longer did cushioned seats line the open floor space, and equipment line the dark mahogany walls standing stories high.
Now, there was an empty room, a flashy, elegant ballroom decorated with soft banners crisp and golden orage and light brown, the colors of fall.
A cascade of multicolored helium baloons drifted around the dark wood ceiling beams, thin, streaming ribbons fluttering below them.
The arched height of the ceiling gave the ballroom an impressive look, a graceful grandeur, and this touch was only complimented by the soft, orange lights hanging in the rafters, casting a dim, flickering glow on the room.
In the center of the arch was mounted a disco ball, the thin cords running the length of the room where, nearest the oak double door entrance, was a long table, draped in blue cloth, one of the school's colors.
This was where the equipment and electrical machinery was kept.
On one side of the long room, the refreshment tables lined the wall stocked with candies, beverages, anything imaginable.
There were round tables strewn across the floor and tablecloths fitted to them, also in royal blue.
Chairs were seated at each table, welcoming the guests.
At the end of the long room was a stage rising above the floor, a large and deep flat area lit by stage lights above.
Normally, this was where speakers or faculty would stand to address the students, but tonight it served as a classy, all purpose dance floor.
Over the arched doorframe stood a fluttering banner reading:
WELCOME TO THE BACK TO SCHOOL SOCIAL!
